Lexsa V\u00e9lez Pad\u00edn<\/p><\/div>\n

University of Puerto Rico, Aguadilla campus student Lexsa V\u00e9lez Pad\u00edn explains how her internship as a member of Conservation Opportunity (CO) helped her exceed her personal and professional goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Velez, who graduated in May 2021 from a bachelor's degree in Marketing with a minor concentration in Human Resources, says that in order to complete her studies, she needed to complete about 180 hours of internship. Then, approximately between February and March 2020, at the suggestion of her professor, she contacted Fabiola Torres, founder of CO, to discuss the possibility of collaboration between them.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time, CO was still in its infancy, Torres needed someone to set up a website to launch the organization more officially and Velez told him about taking a class in website creation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough my concentration was in Marketing, I had to take two basic classes in Information Systems, which is like programming and they give a brief on how to make a web page. I told her about it and she got excited because it was what she needed,\u2018 said Velez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She explains how in college, Information Systems was not her \u201cforte\u201d and that she had to take two double core courses because of how difficult it was for her. However, upon hearing that CO needed that, she set out to face the fear and accepted the \u201cchallenge\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Velez explained how she felt her domain was creating business plans, managing social networks, among others, but did not see herself creating a website again after college.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI learned so much, things that even in college I would never have learned in my life. Fabiola also gave me workshops by meeting with content creators, people who knew how to work with WordPress, which was the platform we specifically used. She gave me a lot of tools to learn because she always emphasized that she wanted me to learn,\u201d Velez explains.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Even after the experience, she recounts how other students doing internships did not \u201clike their experience, or did not learn or that they were basic things\u201d, when she considered that she had \u201cdone everything\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Velez Padin used to consider herself an \u201cintrovert\u201d but feels that, having participated in CO, she now finds it easier to express herself and even her written communication skills have improved through writing social media posts and emails.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another skill that she highlighted as \u201cacquired\u201d during the process and that she continues to use today, was organization. Among the tasks she had to complete in her time as part of the CO team, she had to schedule the publications for the social networks with descriptions of each part of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, she feels she has been able to accomplish a lot of networking through this internship experience and urges other college students or recent graduates to pursue one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have the opportunity to work with a non-profit organization, whatever it is, do it, get involved. After you graduate, to avoid the \u2018gap\u2019 in your resume, invest it for yourself by working with a non-profit organization and it helps you a lot in personal and professional growth,\u201d said Velez.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, V\u00e9lez is currently working on a personal project to open his own small business of mantecados with liqueur. He is studying the procedures to found it and is considering perhaps taking a pastry course or two to complement his knowledge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

V\u00e9lez, quien se gradu\u00f3 en mayo 2021 de un bachillerato en Mercadeo con concentraci\u00f3n menor en Recursos Humanos cuenta como para poder culminar sus estudios, necesitaba completar alrededor de 180 horas de pr\u00e1ctica. Luego, aproximadamente entre febrero y marzo del 2020, con sugerencia de su profesora, se puso en contacto con Fabiola Torres, fundadora de CO, para dialogar una posibilidad de colaboraci\u00f3n entre s\u00ed. Para ese tiempo, CO todav\u00eda estaba en sus tiempos de creaci\u00f3n, Torres necesitaba a alguien que montara una p\u00e1gina web para lanzar la organizaci\u00f3n de manera m\u00e1s oficial y V\u00e9lez le comenta haber tomado clase para creaci\u00f3n de p\u00e1ginas web.\u00a0 \u201cAunque mi concentraci\u00f3n fue en Mercadeo, tuve que coger dos clases b\u00e1sicas de Sistemas de Informaci\u00f3n, que es como programaci\u00f3n y dan un \u2018brief\u2019 de como hacer una p\u00e1gina web. Yo se lo coment\u00e9 y ella se emocion\u00f3 porque era lo que necesitaba\u201d, dijo V\u00e9lez.\u00a0 Ella explica c\u00f3mo en la universidad, Sistemas de Informaci\u00f3n no era su \u201cfuerte\u201d y que tuvo que tomar dos cursos b\u00e1sicos doble por lo dif\u00edcil que se le hac\u00eda. Sin embargo, al escuchar que CO necesitaba eso, se propuso enfrentar el miedo y acept\u00f3 el \u201creto\u201d.\u00a0 V\u00e9lez explic\u00f3 c\u00f3mo sent\u00eda que su dominio era la creaci\u00f3n de planes de negocio, manejo de redes sociales, entre otros, pero no se ve\u00eda creando una p\u00e1gina web de nuevo luego de la universidad. \u201cAprend\u00ed demasiado, cosas que hasta en la universidad jam\u00e1s en la vida hubiese. Fabiola tambi\u00e9n me daba talleres al reunirnos con creadores de contenido, personas que sab\u00edan trabajar con WordPress, que fue la plataforma que utilizamos espec\u00edficamente. Ella me daba muchas herramientas para yo aprender porque ella siempre recalcaba que ella quer\u00eda que yo aprendiera,\u201d explica V\u00e9lez. \u00a0Incluso luego de la experiencia, cuenta como otros estudiantes que hac\u00edan pr\u00e1cticas no \u201cles gust\u00f3 su experiencia, o no aprendieron o que eran cosas b\u00e1sicas\u201d, cuando ella consideraba que hab\u00eda \u201checho de todo\u201d.\u00a0 V\u00e9lez Padin se consideraba una persona \u201cintrovertida\u201d, pero considera que, al haber participado a CO, se le facilita ahora expresarse e incluso sus destrezas de comunicaci\u00f3n escrita han mejorado a trav\u00e9s de la redacci\u00f3n de publicaciones de redes sociales y correos electr\u00f3nicos.\u00a0 Otra de las destrezas que destac\u00f3 como \u201cadquirida\u201d durante el proceso y que contin\u00faa utilizando hoy d\u00eda, fue la organizaci\u00f3n. Entre las tareas que deb\u00eda completar en su tiempo como parte del equipo de CO, tuvo que calendarizar las publicaciones para las redes sociales con descripci\u00f3n de cada parte de estas.\u00a0 De igual forma, ella considera que ha podido lograr mucho \u201cnetworking\u201d mediante esta experiencia de pr\u00e1ctica y le exhorta a otros estudiantes universitarios o reci\u00e9n graduados a perseguir una.\u00a0 \u201cSi tienes la oportunidad de trabajar con una organizaci\u00f3n sin fines de lucro, sea lo que sea, hazlo, z\u00fambate.
