The non-profit organization Conservation Opportunity (CO) and Finca Semila in Tiburones, Barceloneta plan to make a sequel to the event held for the hearing-impaired community in 2023, as part of efforts to include them in environmental conservation projects, such as the practice of agroforestry. Last Saturday, July 16, 2022, CO hosted the event Señando Cacao held at Finca Semila, as part of the “Latino Conservation Week” initiative created by Hispanic Access Foundation. The event featured six Sign Language Interpreters from Sign Language Interpreters, Inc., who were scattered among the different groups of participants. “This is my first time being here and having the experience with cacao, where I learned that it was a fruit; I didn’t know that. They explained it clearly, I learned a lot and it was really interesting.” Also, here in Barceloneta they have different plants; the finca is very beautiful and the nature here is amazing,“ noted Wilfredo Salgado, one of the deaf participants of the event. The participants had the opportunity to work with three different areas: Field work: The participants had a hands-on experience on the finca, where they learned planting and cultivation techniques for the products used on the finca. Those who were interested were able to weed and plant in the designated areas. Scientific Area: They learned about the cocoa plant, its origin, growth methods, and production, benefits, and preparations. Additionally, general information about the microscope was taught, its components, and how to use it to prepare participants to see objects. In addition to the area, there was a small activity in which the participants had the opportunity to make a small puzzle of the cocoa plant. Horticulture: The participants learned the techniques used on the farm for the germination and production of cocoa. They also participated in its management. ”It rained, there was sunshine, we had a place to camp; this garden has different plants like cocoa and I learned how they grow. I learned how to cut them to plant them in the ground and the whole explanation. I had a lot of fun and it was a very nice experience,” added Salgado. After the activities, the participants were able to receive a complementary lunch and a tasting of Puerto Rican chocolate. After the community’s participation in this event, Conservation Opportunity and Finca Semila hope to be able to develop other similar projects in the future.
"onePageScrollNavigationBorderRadiusActive":[
"onePageScrollNavigationTooltipBgColorHover":"
],"onePageScrollNavigationTooltipPaddingHover":[],"onePageScrollNavigationTooltipBorderRadius":[],"onePageScrollNavigationTooltipBorderRadiusHover":[
["post-3372","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
