The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the nonprofit organization, PathStone Corporation, will receive $500,000 through the Abandoned or Contaminated Land Job Training Program to boost job training in Puerto Rico.
This entity was one of 29 organizations selected around the United States to benefit from President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Act fund of $14.3 million, which is triple the amount of money the EPA program usually awards.
The organization, based in Rochester, NY and located in Ponce, PR, will use the funds to train up to 120 students in Puerto Rico and place at least 80 of them in environmental jobs.
Students from the municipalities of Caguas, Guaynabo, Humacao, Juncos, Las Piedras and San Juan will benefit from the training program that includes 334 hours of instruction in 40 hours of training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, Pesticide Safety Worker Protection Standard, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training, among others.
Upon completion of the program, participants will receive up to nine state and one federal certification. As established by the EPA, this is the fifth time PathStone has received assistance under the Groundwork Program.
Other certifications that those who complete the program may receive are:
- Lead and asbestos abatement,
- Hazardous waste operations and emergency response,
- Mold remediation,
- Environmental sampling and analysis, and
- Other environmental health and safety training
